  • Dermatology & Phototherapy Center

Individuals with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, mycosis fungoides, psoriasis, vitiligo, and other photo-responsive skin diseases may undergo phototherapy.

True to its commitment to be a world-class medical facility, Makati Medical Center developed specialized centers focusing on expert and excellent patient care. In July 2002, the MCF Dermlaser and Phototherapy Center was opened to honor Dr. Manuel C. Fernandez, Sr. And in 2007, the Aesthetic Center was inaugurated and now has two (2) specialty locations: the Skin & Laser Hub located at the MakatiMed Wellness Center (Ayala North Exchange Tower 2) and  Dermatology & Phototherapy Center located at the Tower 2 of Makati Medical Center.

Phototherapy treatment offers relief in various skin conditions, including itchiness. Also, it is highly safe and effective. While success rates vary depending on the assessment of the Dermatologist based on the duration, depth, and condition of present dermatological problem, it is recommended to undergo six (6) to nine (9) treatments to start seeing an improvement. The procedure is suitable for pregnant and lactating women, with caution.

Phototherapy is a form of treatment which involves exposure to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), which is also called ultraviolet light (UVL). This has been proven to be highly effective in the treatment of many skin conditions. The skin is exposed to a UV light source for a set amount of time. The procedure can be done in combination with a medication called psoralen.  The treatment reduces itch and leads to the improvement of skin lesions or wounds with several sessions. An ultraviolet radiation source is also utilized for a given amount of time.  Treatment dosages are determined by the attending dermatologist to avoid complications and adverse reactions.

During a treatment, a patient may experience dryness, erythema (redness) due to light exposure, itchiness, mild tingling sensation, and sunburn-like feeling on the skin.

The Dermatology & Phototherapy Center accommodates individuals needing complementary treatment for their pathological skin concerns.  It houses two (2) phototherapy units, and one (1) hand and foot UVA (ultraviolet A-rays) phototherapy. Patients may avail a single session of UVA or UVB procedure. Treatment packages are also available which comprise of five (5) phototherapy sessions.

There are forms of treatment that require the use of very strong immunosuppressive drugs, over-the-counter topical medications, steroids, and other systemic drugs. These alternatives are costly, ineffective for a long term use, and have potential serious side effects.
