Radiology

The Department of Radiology is a multi-specialty facility that provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, and image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic interventional services. It continuously invests in modern medical technology and equipment to upgrade its clinical and academic infrastructure. All results and images are stored within the Picture Archiving & Communication System (PACS), giving accessibility to the entire hospital system and external referring doctors.

The Department also uses cutting-edge, fully-digital, and state-of-the-art equipment including:

• Brachytherapy

• Digital Mammogram Units
• Digital Radiography Units
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanners
• Positron Emission Tomography (PET) / Computed Tomography (CT) Unit
• Portable Digital Radiography Units

• Ultrasound Machines

The Department is led and staffed by board-certified Radiologists, having gained their training and expertise locally and internationally. As of 2020, there are thirty (30) Active Consultants who have made MakatiMed their main area of practice. They are active partners in research and academic training of Medical Interns, Residents, Fellows, and also of Trainees from other clinical departments, institutions, and allied medical professions. The Department is continuously strengthening its sub-specialty expertise:

• Breast Clinic – specialized imaging for the evaluation of breast anatomy, detection of abnormalities, and guidance for interventional procedures. This include digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography), breast ultrasound (sonomammogram), ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy, stereotactic core needle biopsy, wire needle localization, cyst aspiration, fine needle aspiration biopsy, biopsy clip placement, and galactography.

• CT and MRI – cross-sectional imaging obtained through multi-directional X-rays (CT scan) and non-ionizing radiation in the form of magnetic fields and radio waves (MRI), helpful in providing a detailed depiction of the human anatomy, important in locating and evaluating the extent of a disease. Intravenous (IV) and/or intestinal contrasts may be given during the imaging process to further aid in distinguishing any abnormal masses or lesions from the surrounding normal tissues.

• Interventional Radiology – minimally-invasive, image-guided sub-specialty for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases across multiple organ systems. Imaging methods used for guidance include radiographs and fluoroscopy, CT scan, MRI, and ultrasonography.

• PET Imaging Center – uses small amounts of radiotracers or radiopharmaceuticals in view of a special camera and processed through a software to depict changes at the cellular level to evaluate organ and tissue functions even at the early onset of a disease before being detectable by other imaging methods

• Radiation Oncology – uses high-energy radiation for treatment of cancer in different parts of the body, which can be given in combination with chemotherapy for a more effective form of treatment in certain cases, upon the recommendation of the Primary Attending Physician or Oncologist

• Ultrasound & Vascular Laboratory – uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of internal organs, including blood vessels, and their movement within the body that are not visualized on conventional radiography. It is a painless and non-invasive imaging method that can help provide relevant information for the diagnosis of various diseases.

• X-Ray – cost-effective examination of most areas of the body using small amounts of ionizing radiation, which may be used to visualize bone pathologies not limited to fractures, as well as in other organ systems such as the cardiopulmonary, and gastrointestinal systems.
