The Nutrition and Dietetics Department under Clinical Support Services joins the rest of the country in celebrating Nutrition Month, an annual campaign held every July to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos. This year’s theme is entitled “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit for Life”.
The campaign aims to increase awareness on the importance of healthy diets which protects against both under- and overnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer.
An exhibit was presented at the Main Lobby to promote the importance of healthy diet in the prevention of malnutrition and to the reduction of overweight, obesity, and NCDs, and help the public distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods for better food choices. Also featured in the month-long celebration were the weekly Nutri-Quiz for MakatiMed employees, wet and dry sampling with free blood glucose screening, and free nutrition consultation.
The culminating activity, introduced by Ma. Luisa Campos-Cagingin, MD, Head of Clinical Support Services, was held on July 24 at the 8th Floor Tower 2 Auditorium. The highlights of the event were fitness sessions conducted by trainers and nutritionists from Fitness First Philippines, and a scientific symposium sponsored by Nestlé Health Science.
Two of MakatiMed’s highly regarded physicians in the field of nutrition support presented focused and informative lectures. Mercedita Macalintal, MD, of the Department of Pediatrics discussed nutrition management of obesity. Mary Rose Bisquera, MD of the Section of Nephrology talked about healthy diet for hospitalized patients.
A cooking demonstration of healthy and delicious recipes was presented by chefs from Sodexo On-Site Philippines Inc. and Julius Maggi Kitchen. MakatiMed employees participated in the nutrition-themed games of Nutri Clash and Nutri Henyo.
