In celebration of World Hepatitis Day, Makati Medical Center hosted a scientific symposium featuring MakatiMed experts and world-renowned hepatobiliary surgeon, Professor Ronnie Poon. The symposium, titled “Challenges and Advances in Resection of Primary and Secondary Liver Cancers”, was held on July 27 at the 8th Floor Auditorium of MakatiMed.
Prof. Poon, Medical Director of the Hong Kong Integrated Oncology Centre (HKIOC) and Chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, highlighted the need for a multidisciplinary team approach to the management of liver cancer and liver metastases, the role of surgery in the treatment of liver tumors, and shared his expertise in identifying patients who are candidates for surgical resection.
The symposium, with the endorsement of the Philippine Association of HepatoPancreatobiliary Surgeons (PAHBS) and the Hepatology Society of the Philippines (HSP), also featured a discussion of the importance of the multidisciplinary teamwork in liver cancer, with Eternity D. Labio, MD (Section of Hepatology and Unit Head of MakatiMed Liver Unit), Ramon H. Santos-Ocampo, MD (Interventional Radiology, Department of Radiology), Ma. Belen E. Tamayo, MD (Head, MakatiMed Section of Oncology and Co-Chair of the Cancer Center), and Catherine S. C. Teh, MD, (Head, MakatiMed Section of Hepatobiliary Surgery and PAHPBS Vice President).
Dr. Teh also served as the master of ceremonies and moderator of the open forum.
The clinical staff members who attended the symposium were able to ask questions on topics such as the procedures used in Hong Kong for hepatobiliary surgeries and the case studies with liver cancers among others.
