Makati Medical Center inaugurated on August 16 the newly renovated Inpatient Pharmacy Area at the 9th Floor of Tower 1. It was the area’s first major renovation in more than 25 years.
The facility upgrades include new clean rooms, a separate clinical drug study room, and tightened security for dangerous drugs.
These changes allow Pharmacy Services to keep up with the advances in technology and development in practice.
The new area was carefully planned and designed to promote work efficiency, safety, and staff convenience. The process flow was considered as well as the requirement for quality and safe pharmacy services.
In line with the ongoing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Project and Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) process, all medication orders received are reviewed for appropriateness and accuracy prior to dispensing.
Medication orders are tracked through barcoding, and monitored to facilitate the timely dispensing of medications.
The new clean rooms (Class ISO 5 and Class ISO 7) for sterile compounding of special formulations for the specific needs of inpatients are now equipped with state-of-the-art vertical Laminar Flow Hood and Compounding Aseptic Containment Isolator (CACI) or Barrier Isolator, which both conform with international standards of practice. This is where intravenous (IV) admixtures and chemotherapy medications are prepared by skilled and trained senior pharmacists.
A separate clinical drug study room is available for the management and safekeeping of all investigational drugs in the hospital. Security of dangerous drugs is improved with a restricted-access double-locked separate room using proximity access security system.
This recent major renovation will further enhance Pharmacy Services’ improved and streamlined processes, as it remains committed to its mission of providing safe, quality, and comprehensive pharmaceutical services aligned with international standards of safety and quality.
