Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) joined the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) in the nationwide simultaneous Pink Lighting Ceremony in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Held at the Tower 1 Lobby, the activity brought together hospital leaders, healthcare professionals, and guests to promote breast cancer awareness and emphasize the importance of early detection, timely treatment, and continued support for patients.
The program featured opening remarks from Saturnino P. Javier, MD, MakatiMed Interim Co-President and CEO and Medical Director. In his message, he said, “As we light our hospital in pink, we are doing more than creating a beautiful symbol. We are shining a light on the importance of early detection, timely treatment, compassionate care, and home for every woman and every family affected by Breast Cancer.”
Remi Karis M. Velasco, MD, Breast Surgeon at MakatiMed, discussed the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Pink Lighting initiative, underscoring that, “This disease continues to affect countless women and families. And behind every diagnosis is a person—a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a friend, or even a colleague. Behind every person is a story of courage, hope, uncertainty, strength and love. This is why awareness matters.”
A symposium titled “Voices of Hope: Stories, Strength, and Support in the Fight Against Breast Cancer” highlighted the experiences and perspectives of Ms. Michelle Dayrit-Soliven, Maria Lourdes G. Gozali, MD and Victor K. Gozali, MD, and Ms. Kara Magsinoc-Alikpala in their breast cancer journey, underscoring the importance of compassion, understanding, and a strong support system for patients and their families.
The highlight of the event was the Pink Lighting Ceremony, conducted in coordination with the PCS and its participating hospitals nationwide. The symbolic lighting served as a collective call to action to raise awareness, encourage screening and early detection, and stand in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer.
The Hospital’s Breast Imaging Center provides access to breast imaging services that aid in early detection and diagnosis, while its Cancer Institute supports patients requiring cancer treatment. Its Surgical Services also provide surgical care as part of the management of breast cancer.
Through its participation in this nationwide initiative, MakatiMed reaffirms its commitment to advancing breast cancer awareness and helping patients access appropriate care at every stage of their journey.
