PROCEEDINGS
The revival and relaunch of the Makati Medical Center Proceedings has been long overdue. The last edition of MMC Proceedings dates back to more than 15 years ago. For many years, even when I was with the Division of Medical Education and Research [DMER] as the Department Head of the MMC Fellowship Program, this project was always aggressively, though unsuccessfully, pursued by the Division
Understandably, for an institution that speaks of more than 60 years of topnotch quality clinical service and care to its constituents, a noteworthy publication that showcases the excellent research work of its consultants and trainees is essential. The COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately stalled earlier plans to relaunch this publication in 2020. Nonetheless, as the cliché goes, it is better late than never. It is never too late to bring to the consciousness of the MMC medical community and other stakeholders the insightful and provocative research outputs of its medical community – some of which have garnered victories in either local or regional competitions.
PROCEEDINGS 2025
For most people alive today, the COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented phenomenon which affected every aspect of our lives,
almost similar to how a war would have impacted us. Before vaccination was available, the population cowered in fear, in the safety of
our homes; the government responded with a conservative approach, by keeping people off the street for long periods. Jobs were lost,
education in schools was placed on pause, or was provided on-line. Death occurred in many families. The healthcare system took a severe
beating, and long periods of despair were experienced by physicians, nurses, and other medical workers.
