The Oohs and Aahs of Oral Mucosal Medicine, and Professionalism & Ethics in Dermatology

The Makati Medical Center Department of Dermatology, in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) and PDS Research Committee, jumpstarted the year by hosting the first Continuing Medical Education (CME) for 2019 entitled “The Oohs and Aahs of Oral Mucosal Medicine and Professionalism & Ethics in Dermatology” on January 30, 2019 at the 8th Floor Auditorium Tower 2.
Esther C. Leynes, MD, Head of the CME committee of the Department of Dermatology opened the event. Mary Charmaine Castillo, MD, Secretary, PDS, introduced the different Dermatology training institutions and welcomed the newly appointed residents of each institution.
The program started with Rowena F. Genuino, MD speaking about the evolution of doing research through her presentation entitled “Navigating the Digital Highway: Road Map for Dermatology Researchers.”
The event delved into the field of Oral Mucosal Medicine as guest speaker,  Eugenio G. Herbosa, DMD, MMSc, an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon practicing in St. Louie, Missouri, USA, talked about a variety of oral mucosal membrane lesions. His lecture, entitled “Potpourri of Oral Mucosal Membrane Lesions”, provided a number of mucosal membrane pearls that dermatologists should keep in mind when examining patients.
The lecture was followed by a presentation of Claudine C. Malaca, MD, second year resident of the Department of Dermatology, who discussed a case of a venous malformation in the oral mucosa. To emphasize how a multidisciplinary approach is ideal in the care and management of such a case, Joseph Ray Richard R. Cedeño, Chairperson of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology; Donna Marie Leelin-Sarrosa, MD, Department of Dermatology; Benjamin G. Herbosa, MD, Department of Surgery; and plastic surgery fellow Lawrence T. Bello, MD shared their inputs on the case.
Jamie P. Nuñez, MD a graduate of Makati Medical Center, also lectured on Professionalism and Ethics in the field of Dermatology, emphasizing the importance of respecting patients and upholding human dignity.
Valerie F. Herbosa, MD, Chairperson of the Department of Dermatology, awarded the certificates to the guest speakers before Ma. Purita Paz-Lao, MD, President of PDS, officially closed the program. Dr. Paz-Lao thanked all the attendees, consultants, residents, and everyone who made the event a success. 

The Department of Dermatology hosts the course on mucosal medicine, professionalism, and ethics in Dermatology.
