Carcinoid Syndrome

Refers to symptoms of carcinoid tumors, such as flushing and diarrhea.

Cardiac Tamponade

(Pericardial Tamponade)Accumulation of fluid in the sac enclosing the heart (pericardium), which may prevent the heart from filling up with blood. This can result in ineffective circulation, shock, and death.

Cardioversion

Delivery of electrical shock is to the heart to convert an abnormal heart rhythm to a normal rhythm, used to treat heart rhythm disturbances associated with fainting, chest pain, loss of consciousness, low blood pressure, or difficulty breathing.

Cardioverter Defibrillator

A small electrical impulse generator implanted in patients at risk of sudden cardiac death due to ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. It works by detecting cardiac arrhythmia and correcting it by delivering a jolt of electricity.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A nerve injury resulting from compression of the median nerve of the wrist, causing pain and numbness in the index and middle fingers as well as weakness of the thumb.

Celiac Disease

An autoimmune disorder of the small intestine characterized by chronic diarrheaand fatigue, in which nutrients are not absorbed by the body. It is caused by a reaction to a protein in wheat and other grains such as barley and rye.

Cerebral Infarction

A stroke in which a blood vessel to the brain is blocked or leaks to the area outside the vessel.

Cerebrovascular

Blood vessels andarteries that supply the brain.

Charcoal Hemoperfusion

Passing anticoagulated blood through charcoal to remove toxic substances from the blood to treat poisoning and hepatic failure, remove waste in patients suffering from renal failure, and as support for patients pre- and post-liver transplantation.

Colitis

Inflammation of the colon and large intestine.
