Osteoporosis and Bone Health

A one-stop center for detecting, preventing and treating degenerative bone diseases

Osteoporosis is a chronic bone disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle, increasing your susceptibility to fractures.

The Center for Osteoporosis and Bone Health of the Makati Medical Center promotes early detection and preventive measures for bone health, and provides services to help prevent, detect, and treat Osteoporosis and other bone diseases. The center uses bone mineral density (BMD) testing to detect Osteoporosis, and has a specialized therapeutic area to treat this, and other bone-related diseases.

Risk Factors
You may want to visit the center if you have any of the following:
  • Family history of low-impact fracture
  • Calcium and vitamin D deficiencies
  • Sedentary lifestyle, cigarette smoking
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Low body weight
  • Medical conditions that lead to secondary bone loss (i.e., inflammatory arthritis)

Services

Bone Mineral Densitometry Test
BMD testing is conducted using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), the most advanced bone density measuring device, and the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. It measures BMD and provides a comprehensive vertebral assessment of fractures and fat through high-resolution images of skeletal sites.

Our technologists and doctors are all certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), and can make recommendations to referring physicians for treatment or other ancillary examinations.

Therapeutic Area
Our therapeutic area is staffed by nurses trained to administer intravenous drugs for different bone-related diseases like Osteoporosis and inflammatory arthritis (i.e., rheumatoid arthritis), psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and other connective tissue diseases (i.e., systemic lupus erythematosus).
