Dr. Mariano M. Alimurung
Dr. Mariano M. Alimurung was an astute clinician and compassionate healer of the sick. He was, among other things, a dedicated teacher, a born leader and a gifted speaker. He was also a researcher, a writer and an artist.
On top of his demanding jobs as chairman of the Makati Medical Center’s Department of Medicine, director of Coronary Care Unit and head of the Cardiology Section, he was also the first director of the Office of Medical Education, a position he held until his untimely death in 1989.
Dr. Alimurung was passionate about medicine. If he was not attending to patients, he was reading books and journals or organizing scientific meetings where renowned physicians, local and foreign, could share their knowledge and expertise with Makati Med doctors.
He received countless awards, both during his lifetime and posthumously. Among these are the:
- Cunning’s Humanitarian Award and Distinguished Fellow Award given by the American College of Cardiology
- Distinguished Physician Award from the Philippine College of Physicians
- Distinguished Service Award from the Philippine Medical Association
- Distinguished Service Award (posthumously) from the Catholic Physicians Guild of the Philippines
- The Most Distinguished Teacher Award (posthumously) from the Philippine Heart Association
For his community services, he was awarded the Knight Commander with the Star of Gregory the Great and Knight Commander of St. Sylvester I. These are among the highest Papal Orders of Chivalry given by the Pope to Roman Catholics who made distinguished contributions to the Catholic Church, and to humanity.
To honor his fervent and lifetime involvement in the pursuit of academic excellence, Makati Med’s Medical Library was renamed the Dr. Mariano M. Alimurung Library.
