Dr. Carlos L. Sevilla
Being a compassionate man, Dr. Carlos L. Sevilla’s dream was to found the Makati Medical Center as a health institution that would give hope to the many.
By the time he joined Dr. Constantino P. Manahan as founder of our hospital, he was already a renowned EENT specialist with a successful practice at the Manila Doctors Hospital.
As his close friend, Dr. Manuel C. Fernandez Sr. eulogized him when he passed away on April 3, 1997: “Carling was a most unusual and exceptional gentleman. He was soft spoken and always had a cheerful disposition. He was amiable and easy to get along with as evidenced by his popularity with the medical and non-medical staff of MMC. He was kind and compassionate. He was a good husband and father. Carling was an outstanding ophthalmologist, scholar, basketball player, golfer, lover of beauty and above all a true and caring friend.”
Dr. Sevilla was born on August 3, 1917, in Manila. He completed his elementary, high school and pre-medical course at the Ateneo de Manila, then finished his medical studies at the University of the Philippines.
He had his specialty training at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, then studied at the Harvard Medical School in 1949, and the Vienna Medical Academy in 1954.
To honor him, the Makati Medical Center names the Department of Opthalmology after him. It was the department he had founded and headed, after all.
During his life, Dr. Sevilla took up the torch of compassionately reaching out to indigent patients. This torch was picked up by the Makati Med’s EENT Department, and, when he died, by the driven civic leader, Sen. Helena Z. Benitez.
On March 30, 1999, the Helena Z. Benitez Eye Foundation Inc. was launched at the Makati Med. The foundation sponsors cataract operations for destitute patients.
