A History of Excellence

Since our start in 1969, the Makati Medical Center has been the birthplace for many dramatic firsts in medical history in the Philippines, in Asia, and the world.

We conducted the country's first successful heart surgery
We set the trend in Anesthesiology.
In most fields, our specialists were pioneers of the country's medical boards.
We set up the first hospital-based laser center.

We have the country's most state-of-the-art Radiology department.
We opened the country's first intensive care unit.
Our cardiology department was the country's first training center.
Our Computerized Imaging Institute was the first in the country, and remains a primary center for neuroradiology, with advanced facilities that are hard to find in the whole of Southeast Asia.
We were the country to conduct pancreatic and gastric surgeries, and today, complex surgeries—including sophisticated minimally-invasive surgeries—are routinely conducted by our surgery department

We consistently try to follow in the footsteps of our founding fathers—physicians who were, in their time, movers in their respective fields: Dr. Constantino Manahan in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Mariano Alimurung in Cardiology, the two Fores doctors, father J.Y. and son Raul in Surgery, Dr. Romeo Gustilo in Neurosciences, Dr. Manuel Fernandez in Dermatology, and Dr. Carlos Sevilla in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.

In the Philippines, our specialists have contributed immeasurably to the fields of surgery, cardiology, neurosciences, obstetrics and gynecology, and others. Many of the techniques and treatment protocols commonly used in the country today were first employed by our staff. The first open heart surgery, for instance, was done by our Surgery department. The country's first separation of Tetrapus Ischiopagus conjoined twins was done in Makati Med and helped create the country's protocols for similar surgeries.

We at Makati Med take our responsibility to future generations of Filipino healthcare professionals very seriously. Thus, we are among the country’s first to initiate formal training in radiology, neurosurgery and many other fields. Makati Med also pioneered the fields of pediatrics and oncology, helping to establish the practice of each specialization in the country.

Today, training procedures implemented at Makati Med are considered the standard in the country and in Asia. Training at Makati Med is one of the most sought-after programs among medical school graduates, Filipino and from other parts of the world. Each year, we attract the best and the brightest in medicine, the cream of the crop, and we put them through a rigorous training that leads them on to become board topnotchers, and the best in their field. Wherever they go, Makati Med-trained doctors, nurses and health practitioners go on to shine and practice good medicine, with a heart.

The quest to find better care and cures for many illnesses and diseases is a never ending one. Makati Med is home to one of the country’s major medical research programs, spanning important areas of medicine.

Every year, Makati Med publishes the Makati Medical Center Proceedings, a journal that compiles the research and medical experiments done by its staff. We continuously undertake new research projects in various fields, and translate these as quickly as possible to improvements at the bedside.

Part of National History

Makati Medical Center’s rich history is inextricably tied to the history of Philippine society itself. Our founder, Dr. Constantino P. Manahan went on to become President Sergio Osmena’s adviser on hospitals. Practically all past Presidents, political officials, business and society leaders have come to Makati Med to have themselves treated. Many of the country's who's whos, terminally ill, have come here to die with dignity. We have cared for many descendants of the country’s historical figures, and many descendants of our heroes have chosen to work at our prestigious institution, as well.

Today, Makati Med is ready to serve the world. We are currently in the process of being accredited by the Joint Commission International. JCI accreditation means that we meet global standards of safe, efficient, low-cost and ethical medical practice. In practical terms, this means that patients from anywhere in the world can have the medical costs they incur at our hospital reimbursed by their insurance or managed care organizations, wherever these MCOs are based.
