Medical Records
The importance of creating and keeping a systematic record of your medical history and care cannot be underestimated. This is exactly where our Medical Records department comes in.
Our Medical Records Department (MRD) forms part of the basic hospital set-up. Its functions include:
- to ensure that patient records are available at all times
- to see to it that medical records are maintained in accordance with principles and practices of efficient and effective MRD
- to maintain comprehensive indexes
- to review records for completeness and accuracy
- to respond to subpoenas and medico-legal cases directed to the hospital
- to maintain and safeguard the confidentiality of medical records
We've grown a really long way through the years, beginning with a small unit of 7 employees to care for the records of our first 583 patients in 1969, to a microfilm machine-based system capable of managing 96,324 patients in the 1970s, to the Patient Index System run by a 120 MB hard disk computer in the 80s.
Today, we are in the process of moving our medical records into a more systematic and safe electronic system. Having this new system in place will speed up retrieval of your records each time you visit our hospital or any of our doctors.
Our new system will enable doctors to access patients' records almost instantaneously, from hand-held devices. Records will be stored in a safe and secure database. Our staff numbers almost 50.
