Among Makati Medical Center’s founders is a surgeon who placed much emphasis on the field of surgery. Because of this, we can boast today of being at the forefront of surgery in the Philippines, as well as at par with the world's best.
For one, we have the most complete and sophisticated surgical equipment in the country. Our Surgery department is organized into several specialty centers devoted to the surgical treatment of illnesses, injuries, and other disorders. Our surgical teams have long been at the forefront of surgical care, education, and research.

Our Surgery department has been a trailblazer in the country: in 1989, we opened a facility for open heart surgery, and it was here that the country’s first heart operation was performed in 1995.
We began undertaking laparascopic procedures in 1991, and since then have routinely conducted these advanced surgical procedures. To date, we have done more than 3,500 laparoscopic cholecystectomies—probably the most done by any hospital in the country. Recently, we were also the first to use Harmonic Scalpel or “Ultracision” for mastectomy in the Philippines.
On an average, we carry out about 2,500 major operations every year, with a fifth of that done on indigent patients under our Corporate Social Responsibility program
Today, we have 30 active and associate active consultants and practicing surgeons—with most of them fellows of the Philippine College of Surgeons or diplomates of the Philippine Board of Surgery. Many of them are also versed in other subspecialties.
