The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Makati Medical Center is focused on getting people back on track, helping them regain control over their lives after experiencing a disabling disease or traumatic injury. Be it pain, weakness, difficulty in mobility, developmental delay, speech and swallowing problems, and dysfunction in other areas of activities of daily living, we can help.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a branch of medicine that is based on a holistic, comprehensive and individualized approach to patient care. It benefits patients of any age group diagnosed to have had stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, movement disorders, amputation, joint replacement, sports injuries, joint and other musculoskeletal disorders.
World Class Health Care
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a world class rehabilitation facility. Our medical staff is US-trained, and board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and/or by the Philippine Board of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Our therapeutic equipment is modern and technologically advanced. Our board-certified therapists are fully trained to deliver the highest quality treatments that emphasize utmost patient care. We work constantly to improve on our services, continuously updating our equipment and our methods so that you receive no less than the best.
The standard of quality we maintain allows us to achieve the rehabilitation goals set for each patient, facilitating return of function in a shorter period of time.
The Rehabilitation Team
A multi-disciplinary team works together to help patients reach their fullest physical, psychological, social, vocational and avocational potentials consistent with their impairments, environmental limitations and life goals. It is the team’s aim to work with patients and their families to determine realistic goals, develop and carry out plans to obtain functional recovery despite residual disability.
Physiatrist—the rehabilitation physician leader who conducts medical and rehabilitative evaluation, coordinates with other medical specialists, and designs specific and individualized rehabilitation treatment program for each patient.
Physical Therapist—evaluates and carries out individualized treatment programs as prescribed by the physiatrist or referring physician.
Occupational Therapist—evaluates and trains patients in self-care activities, fabricates custom-fitted splints, programs to maximize independence in all aspects of life.
Speech Pathologist—assesses in detail and treats articulation and language disorders such as aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia and cognitive-communication impairments, as well as swallowing problems.
Orthotist-Prosthetist—fabricates special footwear, spinal and lower extremity orthoses (braces) and prostheses (artificial limbs) when necessary, to achieve safe and proper mobility.
The rehabilitation team works hand in hand with the patients and their caregivers to achieve the patients’ maximum function and prevent complications brought about by various impairments and disabilities.
Physiatric Comprehensive Evaluation and Treatment Services
Patients are provided with a comprehensive set of medical and rehabilitative services. Aside from physical and occupational therapy services, we are the only physical medicine and rehabilitation center in the country that offers speech therapy within the department. Our holistic approach to healthcare allows our patients to receive all their rehabilitative needs from one place to another.
Physical Therapy—physical modalities (heat, cold, electrical stimulation, laser, biofeedback, traction, CPM, compression pumps), massage, therapeutic exercises, joint mobilization, myofascial release and mobility training.
Occupational Therapy—hand therapy, desentization, activities of daily living training, work hardening, sensory-perceptual training, splint fabrication, training in use of adaptive equipment and mobility aids
Speech Therapy—dysphagia management, articulation training and communication skills development, aphasia management, cognitive training, language facilitation for the hearing impaired, cleft lip and palate patients.
Special Treatment Packages
We offer special rehab treatment packages to provide specific patients with comprehensive programs that are both preventive and therapeutic in nature. Our cost-effective treatment packages are done in cooperation with other specialties. These consist of rehab evaluation and monitoring, exercise prescription, brace or garment prescription (as needed) and patient education materials.
Hemodialysis Rehab Treatment Package aims to prevent and treat deconditioning and improve mobility in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Osteopenia/Osteoporosis Rehab Treatment Package aims to prevent and treat the complications of osteopenia or osteoporosis and promote wellness.
Lymphedema Rehab Treatment Package aims to prevent and treat complications of mastectomy, among other causes of lymphedema, loss of flexibility and mobility common in patients with lymphedema.
