Makati Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics is committed to providing exceptional health care to children, from birth through 18 years of age. Our department began operating in 1969 with less than 10 pediatric consultants headed by our founder, Dr. Natividad Alimurung. Through the years, our roster of pediatricians has grown to more than 70 active and associate active members. We have made waves in the practice of pediatrics in the country. We have 34 active and associate active general pediatricians who make sure that each child’s growth, development and health care needs are well taken cared of. Children with special health problems are referred to our 36 active and associate active subspecialists. We work hand-in-hand with the Emergency Department to provide ambulatory care to pediatric patients. A pediatric resident is assigned to the Emergency Department at all times and coordinates with the child’s attending physician. Our staff are all certified and accredited by their respective specialty organizations. To date, we have pediatric floors on the 8th and 6th floor, and a pediatric ward. We have a 7-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 14-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that are up-to-date, providing the best care for our patients.
Our mission statement is to provide comprehensive and specialized pediatric care through constant innovation in competency-based training and evidence-based practice, supported by appropriate professional equipment and specialized tools. Our vision is to be an internationally recognized model of excellence adherent to global standards in pediatric practice, training and research, sharing the vision of MMC to be an internationally recognized medical center dedicated to excellence in health care.
In 1992, we made history through the successful separation of the Siamese twins. With the able stewardship of Makati Medical Center’s medical director, Dr. Raul G. Fores and the Pediatrics department vice-chairman Dr. Luis M. Rivera, Sr., a team of highly skilled specialists from the various departments successfully separated the twins. The twins have since led normal, healthy lives since their critical operation.
Our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), opened in 1996, is one of the best in the country. We have successfully treated many patients, some flown in from as far as Micronesia.
Likewise, our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), with its able and efficient staff, has been successful in treating and taking care of our tiniest and youngest patients, from different parts of the Philippines to patients from Micronesia, and even as far away as Scandinavia.
The Cardiology Section has been crucial in the medical care of patients undergoing pediatric cardiac surgeries since 1999.
The Hematology-Oncology Section has been instrumental in introducing bone marrow transplantation in the newly opened Hematology-Oncology Unit at the 7th floor, with plans of introducing the first Stem Cell transplantation in a patient with leukemia.
In line with our legacy of being a "hospital with a heart", we have our outpatient charity services, attended by our subspecialty staff, which provides ambulatory care and immunization programs, as well as subspecialty clinics in Pediatric Allergology and Immunology, Pediatric Cardiology, Developmental Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Pulmonology, ensuring that the less fortunate are able to get the same quality of care as our private patients.
