The Urogynecology and Incontinence Center provides diagnostic test and treatment for men and women with the following conditions:
At the Urogynecology and Incontinence Center, the following diagnostic tests may be required in preparation for your consultation with the Urogynecologist and Urologists.
These tests which are usually done on the first visit may be repeated on subsequent visits, if necessary:
The patient will be given one container to collect her midstream urine sample. The sample will be used for urinalysis. For female patients, they will be instructed to drink 2 to 3 glasses of water prior to the tests. Examination can be best achieved with a full bladder.
Urinalysis This test is done to look for white blood cells, protein, sugar, blood in the urine. (Results will be available within 5 minutes.)
Urine for culture and sensitivity This test is done to look for the organism that causes infection of the bladder when needed. (Results for the culture will be available within 3 days.)
Cough Test/ Stress Test This test is done to confirm any urinary leakage and to quantify the degree of urine loss. This is important in the choice of the treatment, and in assessing the treatment outcome.
The patient with a full bladder will be asked to cough vigorously while she is having her pelvic examination or while standing, to demonstrate any urinary leakage.
The cough/ stress test will be modified to suit the patient's age, mobility and medical conditions.
At the end of the cough test, the patient is asked to pass urine at the uroflow machine (a device which measures the amount and rate of flow of the urine).
Urodynamics Studies These are tests done with the use of computer to determine the muscle activity of the bladder during filling and emptying. Urodynamics studies are useful in the following situations where:
To perform the test, two fine tubes will be inserted into the bladder – one used for filling the bladder with saline solution and the other for recording the bladder pressure. A third tube will be inserted into the rectum for recording the abdominal pressure.
These tubes are connected to the computer to monitor and record these pressures. During the test, the patient will be asked to indicate when she feels her first desire to pass urine. She will also be asked to cough to demonstrate urinary incontinence. She will then pass urine into the uroflow machine to complete the test. (Total time for completion of test: 30 minutes)
Bladder Scan Ultrasound scan of the bladder is used to measure residual urine volume. (Total time for completion of test: 3 minutes)
