Medical tourism is also known as medical travel or health tourism and refers to a rapidly-growing practice of Americans, Europeans and other citizens of developed countries traveling to another country to obtain health care or services at far lower costs.
Some common medical procedures outsourced by Medical Tourists are complex specialized surgeries such as joint replacement (knee/hip), cardiac surgery, dental surgery, and cosmetic surgeries. Most often, such medical journeys include leisure and travel.
Cost is clearly the most important reason that patients travel many miles for a medical procedure. Most of these outsourced procedures are done in hospitals at developing countries at a fraction of what they will cost in U.S. or European hospitals.
On the whole, Filipino doctors who practice in tertiary hospitals in the country’s capital have skills that are at par, or that even exceed, those of their Western counterparts. The country’s medical school curricula are tougher than those of other southeast Asian countries.
There are two or three good hospitals in the Metro Manila that can boast of advanced facilities and complete medical equipment to undertake even complex medical procedures.
Because it is worth it. First, you will save a lot of money—procedures at Makati Med cost a fraction of what they cost in your country. More, your overall healing experience is guaranteed in a country whose people genuinely warm, caring and hospitable.
Simply, high quality care at low costs. The Philippine has a huge pool of competent doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other medical health practitioners, with world-class skills. The country’s best hospitals are as well-equipped as hospitals in Western countries.

Prepare your personal information, such as your current address, phone number and employer. Also organize your health information—all matters pertaining to your condition, your medical records, the medications you are taking and information regarding your HMO and other medical insurance benefits. Plan your payment arrangements beforehand.
Yes, you need to bring all your documents and records. Just as you would when you take a vacation, you need to bring with you your passport and other personal identification. Also bring all your health information, all matters pertaining to your condition, your medical records, the medications you are taking and information regarding your health insurance.
Because we are a JCI-accredited medical facility, many international health management organizations recognize Makati Med. Consequently, you can probably charge your medical bills to your HMO, but your provider may have specific rules.
Like in most hospitals, when you are admitted you are asked to pay a percentage of your room charges. You have to inform the Admitting department if you intend to use your HMO or other insurance, or if your employer will pay for your medical bills. We accept cash, bank transfers, check payment and payment though major credit cards. For more details of how you will be billed, visit our How to Pay page.
Most hospitals in the U.S. will bill you after your stay at the hospital. At Makati Med, as in other Philippine hospitals, your medical bills will be collected in full before you leave the medical facility.
Not always. But as an international patient, you are naturally concerned about the quality of medical care that you will receive overseas. Unfortunately, because of the boom in medical tourism, there are a number of places where having a surgery or another medical procedure done will put you at risk. However, rest assured that cheaper medical services do not always mean substandard ones. At Makati Med we offer world-class care at a fraction of what a hospital in your home country will charge you.
Makati Med is able to offer medical services at prices far lower than what they will cost in U.S. hospitals mainly because of the currency difference between the two countries, and the lower cost of living. That you pay much less than you would in the U.S., does not mean that the quality of these procedures is compromised.
Training procedures at Makati Med are considered the standard in the country and in Asia. Training at this hospital is one of the most sought-after programs among medical school graduates, and not only those from the Philippines. Even the interns and residents who may visit you as part of their training are licensed doctors. More, most of our specialists trained at prestigious medical institutions in the U.S., Europe or other parts of the world.
The Philippines has a long tradition of healing. It is well known as one of the world's alternative healing centers, home to both the esoteric but world-famous mystics and faith healers and to professional practitioners of the more down-to-earth and acceptable alternatives such as reflexology, acupuncture and acupressure.
It is natural for you to be concerned about the safety of your health records, especially since American laws do not apply overseas. The Philippines, however, has a thriving medical transcription industry, so there is widespread awareness and compliance with U.S. privacy laws that pertain to health records.

Probably, but not very much. The Philippines was once an American colony, so most Filipinos speak English and have adapted modern, Westernized dress, manners, figures of speech and ways of thinking. More importantly, expect the hospital to be ruled by Western standards of sanitation.
